My review is an honest one based on how I felt about the writing and the handling of the topic. I have read many books on frugality over the last year or so, as I needed to really clean up my own finances. I have read others - some good, some "meh" some downright weird.

I like Yeager's books. He's down to earth and funny.

Don't Throw That Away!: 1, Ways to Reuse Your Stuff by Jeff Yeager

His books are choke full of useful information and an enjoyable read as well. The index lists all the items we shouldn't be "throw ing away" so it is easy to find ideas for specific items in question. Yeager also includes interesting data regarding environmental impacts of our throw away society. It is not just about saving money - but also our earth. Again, the author is down to earth and never sounds preachy or new age airy.

Don't Throw That Away!: 1,001 Ways to Reuse Your Stuff

He's sort of a like a beloved uncle who likes somewhat low brow humour - my kinda guy. The thing is - the book is an enjoyable, funny read. I read it in about two days. Although not all the tips fit my lifestyle as I live in a townhouse co-op and the remodeling ideas would not be practical - there was enough ideas to help even a seasoned cheapskate like myself to save money e.

See - I am even getting my own ideas from this books tips. Anyway, of all the frugality books I have read - this is one of the more enjoyable reads. There is no condescending tone, no judgment, just good ideas and food for thought on re-using and re-purposing. This book, along with Mr. Yeager other title, "The Cheapskate Next Door" would make a nice gift for someone moving out of home for the first time.

The advice contained in the two books would have been helpful in my twenties when I was young and making many financial mistakes and the easy going writing style is comfortable for young adults, middle aged folk like me or older adults. Sep 07, Sandy Day rated it really liked it. If what Jeff wants to believe is true, my grandparents are having a grand old time in the afterlife.

Throughout the book, I was reminded of my grandparents, who, born at the turn of the 20th century, raised a family during the Great Depression. In fact, Jeff dedicates the book to people like them.

First Time Buyer? How to Choose a Real Estate Agent

My grandmother cut panty hose in strips, dyed them, rolled them into balls, and braided them into rugs and hot pads. Jeff addresses many of my pet peeves and borderline hoarding concerns throughout the book, affirming the slightly embarrassing impulses that we cheapskates, who are also environmentalists, encounter in day-to-day life.

The book is written in a comical tone and can be read for entertainment value alone. Some of the craft ideas are outlandish, not to mention time consuming, like gluing googly eyes onto styrofoam popcorn to make fridge magnets, come on! But the craft ideas sent me back to a simpler time when such projects were actually undertaken by myself and others around the kitchen table on long, lazy afternoons. I find it hard to fathom that any hard-core cheapskate would spend money on such a ridiculous product as a dryer sheet.

Not to mention, that the jury is still out on whether or not the chemicals in dryer sheets may be hazardous to human health.

    See a Problem?

I say, leave dryer sheets on the shelf in the store. Otherwise a thoroughly helpful especially with an index by item and informative read. The impetus may have evolved from cheapskatedness, but it is for the most part, sound environmental advice. Funny and interesting, but I'm not sure I would do most of the things listed. It reminds me of Tightwad Gazette. If I had to summarize this book it would be: Start composting everything biodegradable, and there's about a million uses for leftover pantyhose.

    Shop with confidence

One day I'm actually going to apply some of the tips of these kinds of books, and start making a difference around my home and in my budget, haha. Until then, I always find books like this worth reading. I'd only recommend this b 3. I'd only recommend this book to someone who liked the idea of becoming an extreme cheapskate.
